Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018), directed by Jung Bum-shik, is a supernatural horror film that explores the terrifying and eerie world of a real-life abandoned psychiatric hospital in South Korea. Based on the infamous Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, the film immerses audiences in a disturbing journey filled with supernatural occurrences, psychological tension, and unrelenting fear. Combining elements of found footage with traditional horror storytelling, Gonjiam delivers a spine-chilling experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
The story revolves around a group of young individuals who are part of a live-streaming project meant to explore the notorious Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, a place that has been abandoned for years and is rumored to be haunted. The group, led by the charismatic but skeptical Ha-joon (played by Wi Ha-joon), plans to investigate the hospital’s dark past and capture evidence of its ghostly activity for their online audience. As they explore the decaying building, they begin to encounter strange occurrences and disturbing visions that challenge their understanding of reality. The deeper they venture into the hospital, the more intense the supernatural forces become, leading to terrifying and life-threatening situations.
What sets Gonjiam apart from other horror films is its effective use of the found footage style, which enhances the sense of immersion and realism. The use of handheld cameras and the live-streaming format allows the audience to experience the events from the characters’ perspectives, heightening the suspense and fear as the group ventures into the unknown. The shaky camera movements and claustrophobic shots amplify the tension, making every twist and turn feel unpredictable and disorienting. This approach makes the horror feel immediate and personal, as if the viewers themselves are part of the terrifying investigation.
